Elder Abuse

An attendant, employed in a nursing home, walks into a patient’s room, says, “I’m tired of your ass,” and then proceeds to hit her in the face resulting in a broken nose. Another attendant entices a brain-damaged resident with cigarettes to attack another patient, then sits back to observe the two brawl. An elderly female resident is molested by a male attendant while he bathes her (Ruppe, 2014). What do all of these instances have in common? Real life elder abuse.

With everyday busy lives, nursing homes and communal living centers are becoming more and more common for the seniors in our community. While these assisted and group living centers can be great, both physical and psychological abuse has been known to occur there.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services hosts yearly inspections in an attempt to regulate and lower these types of instances; however, they are not entirely successful as the previous instances reveal.

Insufficient state and federal funding attributes to this problem according to Anne Burns Johnson, CEO of the California Association of Homes & Services for the Aging. Nursing assistants typically average around $7 to $9 an hour.

The federal government contributes the most to nursing home care mainly through Medicaid and Medicare.

Some states have been working to implement new bills to improve nursing home care nationwide by increasing funding, setting minimum staffing limits, increasing the required internet disclosure of nursing home conditions, and creating stricter fine levels.
