FDA Provides Warnings in Safety Announcement
In a drug safety announcement, the FDA has taken steps to warn patients about the potential health concerns related to the use of Invokana and similar drugs. They noted that ketoacidosis could develop, which causes the body to produce high levels of blood acids that can lead to diabetic comas or even death. Further, the drugs have been linked to kidney damage and other serious side effects.
The FDA’s warning includes a caution for those that experienced the following symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal pain
- Unusual fatigue or sleepiness
These drugs have been approved by the FDA to help lower blood sugar in adults who have type 2 diabetes, but now, its studies are showing they may be doing more harm than good.
How Failure to Warn Can Lead to Severe Injuries
The increased risk of kidney failure when taking Invokana and similar SGLT2 inhibitors should be concerning for manufacturers, but they have failed to warn patients and physicians of these issues. If they had properly warned patients, those who suffered serious side effects as a result could have had the option to select an alternate medication and got the medical attention needed to ensure no damage had been done to their kidneys. Johnson & Johnson, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim, and AstraZeneca have all marketed and manufactured these drugs.
It is in your best interest to act quickly. There is a time limit in each state for filing injury claims, known as the statute of limitations. If a claim is not filed against the manufacturer, marketers, retailers, and healthcare providers before the statute of limitation expires, an injured party will not be able to bring a claim against those liable for their injuries.
