Hospital Negligence
Hospitals are legally responsible when their employee nurses and physicians provide substandard medical care. This may include intern or resident doctors failing to provide appropriate care, or nursing negligence such as failing to follow physicians' orders or to notify physicians of serious changes in a patient's condition. In one example, SS&L lawyers successfully settled during trial a lawsuit on behalf of the wife and children of a young man who died when emergency blood tests, which were ordered by a physician, were not performed and evaluated by the hospital staff. Unaware that the patient had elevated bleeding times, the patient was given medication that caused him to suffer cardiopulmonary arrest and severe brain damage, leading to his death. The family received a $2,500,000 settlement from the hospital as a result of the negligence of the nursing staff and resident doctor.
