Recall of Davol Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Repair Patch

Davol Inc. of Rhode Island, a manufacturer of the Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patch, has issued a recall of these medical devices used in hernia repair surgeries. According to the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health web site,
The "memory recoil ring" that opens the Bard® Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patch can break under the stress of placement of the large sized products in the intra-abdominal (inside the belly area) space. This can lead to bowel perforations (rupture) and/or chronic (recurring) intestinal fistulae (abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs) (http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/recalls/recall-122205.html).
As of February 1, 2007, the recall has been classified as a Class I recall because the defect has a reasonable probability to cause serious adverse health consequences, including death.
Symptoms related to a failed Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patch might include unexplained or persistent abdominal pain, fever, or tenderness at the implant site. According to the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health, patients who have been implanted with one of these recalled devices should seek immediate medical attention if experiencing these or any other unusual symptoms.
