Civil Rights Violations

By seeking compensation and redress for civil rights violations, we hold law enforcement authorities accountable, and ultimately, we make our communities a better and safer place in which to live.  SS&L lawyers have successfully brought several lawsuits against law enforcement authorities and municipalities for violating one’s right to be free from the use of excessive force and for otherwise causing harm without reasonable justification.  In one of our cases, an officer shot an unarmed 19-year-old man during what should have been a routine traffic stop.  At trial, the jury concluded that the officer was not justified in shooting him.  The man was ultimately awarded more than $300,000.  In another recent case, SS&L negotiated a favorable settlement on behalf of the family members of a 23-year-old man who was shot to death in the back as he attempted to flee in his automobile.  During the case, SS&L lawyers Peter Brodhead and Nick DiCello successfully overturned an unfavorable ruling on appeal.  In another of our cases, an officer beat a handcuffed teenager with a heavy flashlight.  The firm was able to recover substantial compensation for him because the police had used unreasonable and excessive force.
