Cleveland Malpractice · Paralysis Attorneys
Spinal cord injuries can occur during spinal surgery if the surgeon carelessly nicks, severs or compresses the spinal cord. This is a serious surgical error that can have devastating consequences for the patient and his or her family. Often the injury to the spinal cord will result in permanent paralysis, enormous medical bills, long-term financial hardship and psychological turmoil.
Sometimes a spinal cord injury occurs after the spinal surgery, due to a developing hematoma or blood clot. A blood clot forms around the spinal cord, compressing it until the patient begins to experience symptoms which can range from tingling in the legs and feet to unstable blood pressure. Once symptoms occur, it is critically important that the medical staff recognize the high suspicion for spinal cord bleeding and notify the patient's surgeon. Once notified of these symptoms, it is the responsibility of the patient's surgeon to promptly order appropriate radiology studies to confirm the presence of the hematoma. Timely surgery to evacuate the hematoma and relieve the pressure on the spinal cord is critical to preserving the patient's neurologic function.
