Cleveland Nursing Mistake Lawyers
Today's nurses are highly trained health professionals charged with tremendous responsibilities in the day-to-day care of patients. When nurses fail to do their jobs properly, patients may not be properly monitored or receive the correct and appropriate dosing of medications. Important Deterioration in the patient's condition may also go unreported to the physicians — sometimes with devastating consequences.
When a patient is first admitted to a health care facility, nurses are required to assess a patient's risk for falls. If the patient is at increased risk for falls, special precautions should be taken to minimize the patient's risk. Patients deemed to be "high risk" often will be prohibited from getting out of bed without assistance. To help the high-risk patient, a monitor may be placed under the patient to notify hospital staff if the patient attempts to walk unassisted. This issue is particularly prominent within the geriatric patient population.
Nurses are also required to evaluate the patient's risk factors for developing skin ulcers or skin breakdown. (Such ulcers are sometimes called decubitus ulcers.) Using the Braden Scale, a nurse must determine the patient's ability to move independently, amongst other factors. Depending on the patient's risk for skin breakdown, an aggressive turn schedule and a special mattress may be used. In addition, it may be necessary to involve other specialists, such as a wound-care nurse, a nutritionist or even a plastic surgeon.
Nursing care — when done properly — saves lives and is an integral part of good health care. When done poorly, however, patient lives can be endangered, and overall care suffers. If you or your loved one has suffered from poor nursing care, you need to contact an experienced trial lawyer firm. Our trial attorneys can help you evaluate whether the nurse violated the standard of care, and whether the damages involved warrant legal action. As with any legal question, the specific facts of a situation are what determine whether you have a viable legal claim for the suffering you or your loved one endured.
