Hernia Patch Recall for Bard® Composix® Kugel® Mesh
A line of popular surgical patches used to repair incisional hernias has been linked to serious adverse health consequences — even death. Numerous models of Bard® Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patches have now been recalled by medical device manufacturer Davol Inc., in association with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The Kugel® Mesh Patch has been used to repair hernias caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after surgery. The patch is placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision. The patch is then held open by a "memory recoil ring" that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat once it is in place.
Reason for the Kugel® Mesh Patch Recall
The reason for the recall is that the ring can break under the stress of placement inside the belly area. The result may be bowel ruptures and recurring intestinal fistulae (abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs). These side effects have caused patients to suffer severe discomfort, to lose time from their jobs, and to incur significant medical debt in order to address the damage. Under the worst of circumstances, these faulty devices have caused families to lose loved ones.
